Purpose of the assessment (with the learning outcome Mapping) | The purpose of the assignment is to allow students to conduct research, analysis, and evaluation of advancements and applications of optical fibre communication. Students will be able to complete the following ULOs: Essential knowledge on optical networks. Identify and describe the elements and components of optical Analyse and evaluate different optical network architectures and protocols Knowledge on current topics & issues in optical communication systems. |

Submission Guidelines | All work must be submitted on Moodle by the due date along with a completed Assignment Cover Page. The link of the recorded video must be included on the report cover page. The report must include clear headings and subheadings for all requirements mentioned below in the assessment description and instructions The assignment must be in MS Word in IEEE format with appropriate section headings. Reference sources must be cited in the text of the report and listed appropriately at the end in a reference list using IEEE referencing style. |

Assessment Description and Instructions
Objective:
The objective of this research assignment is to provide an in-depth understanding of optical fibre communication technology and its various applications. The assignment will cover the basic principles of optical fibre communication, different types of optical fibres, and their manufacturing processes. The assignment will also highlight the latest advancements in the field and the future prospects of optical fibre communication and its networking architecture.
Task 1: Introduction to Optical Fibre Communication
- Explain the basic principles of optical fibre communication
- Describe the types of optical fibres and their characteristics
- Discuss the manufacturing process of optical fibres
Task 2: Advancements in Optical Fibre Communication
- Highlight the latest advancements in optical fibre communication technology
- Describe the role of optical fibre amplifiers, such as Erbium-doped fibre amplifiers (EDFAs)
- Explain the significance of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and its applications in optical fibre communication
- Discuss the advancements in optical fibre sensors and their applications
Task 3: Applications of Optical Fibre Communication
- Provide an overview of the various applications of optical fibre communication technology and architectures, such as telecommunications, internet communication, and cable TV
- Discuss the applications of optical fibre communication and networks in medical science, defence, and aerospace industries
- Highlight the role of optical fibre communication in the development of smart cities and the Internet of Things (IoT)
Task 4: Future of Optical Fibre Communication
- Discuss the future prospects of optical fibre communication
- Explain the impact of 5G technology on optical fibre communication

Deliverables:
- A research paper of 8-10 pages, excluding references and cover page, in IEEE format
- A PowerPoint presentation of 15-20 slides highlighting the key findings of the research
- Each group will prepare 10 minutes recorded video that summarises the research and its key findings.
The recorded video must be submitted with your assignment report in week 9. The link of the recorded video must be included on the report cover page.
